The village I am conducting my research is called 'Pattiyawela'. It is a small village comprised of around 50 houses and belongs to the village cluster called 'Nebadawewa' that is comprised of three villages. It is under the divisional secretariat of Horowpothana in the Anuradhapura district, Sri Lanka.

Demographically, the village is predominantly Sinhala Buddhists. The village has access to two irrigation tanks, a temple and acres of paddy fields. All farmers in the village are small holder paddy cultivators. The children attend schools in the neighbouring villages as Pattiyawela is too small to have its own school. It does however, have a kindergarten.
