When I began harvesting mung beans with my host, I was surprised at how every time I harvest a bag of mung bean pods, there is still so much left to harvest. I was told that in a single cultivation cycle, mung bean pods can be harvested at least twice or three times from the same plants.
I may be romanticising the labour aspect of plucking mung beans, but being out in the field, plucking mung beans in the morning sun, battling the heat, among the many mung bean plants brought me a kind of peace I hadn’t felt before. I had never felt such a sense of accomplishment as I did after harvesting a whole bag of mung beans by myself. I always wanted to experience farming, and I was curious about the physical stresses it would have on the body and mind. I felt so grateful to be out in the field and finally have the opportunity to experience it.
